LUCKYLAKER WI-FI FISH-
FINDER by Karen Middleditch
H
ubby Stephen and I do almost all our
fishing from the bank and haven’t got
any experience of using fish finders,
so we were both very interested in seeing
how effective a castable finder would be.
The Luckylaker comes well
packaged in a small box and is
supplied with a charger and
instructions. I found these to be
straight forward and easily
understandable, even though the
wording was a little strange -
probably the result of translation.
Finding and downloading the app
to my i-phone was a breeze and
after inputting the serial
number and Wi-Fi code the
Luckylaker immediately linked to
the phone. Easy!
The finder itself is a bright green
solid plastic sphere weighing just
under three ounces and the size of
an apple with a small fixing point for
the main line or leader. We took the
Luckylaker to a productive swim on a
gravel pit where we regularly fish and
Stephen stood beside me and cast out.
He said that it was very
aerodynamic and we
could easily see the
bright colour at long
range. He started to
reel in steadily and
we both watched the
display on my phone.
You can make
adjustments to the
settings, but we left
the default ones on
as the speed and
sensitivity of the read
out were just about
perfect. You can see from the screenshot,
we quickly found the pronounced hump
that we knew was there and were looking
for! We soon made one adjustment to the
settings in this relatively shallow
environment to limit the depth to five
metres, which allowed the device to provide
even more detailed readings of the depth.
Battery life seems to be very good and
using a notepad and taking screenshots
we are sure that this is a most effective
and exciting way of identifying areas of
interest, both for fishing on the day and for
future reference. I can’t comment on the
longevity of the Luckylaker, but we are
very impressed at this stage so, rather
than returning the finder after the review,
we have chosen to buy it and are thoroughly
looking forward to mapping other waters
we fish - not to mention taking it out on a
boat at Pitsford later in the year!
