26 SHOOTING SPORTS MAGAZINE
GENERAL | THE 2015 BRITISH SHOOTING SHOW
whose previous slim cut was often a bit
‘upright’ for crawling about in. Arxus wellies
are another relatively new name to me but
show some nice patented features to
assist fi t and also suit my skinny legs a
little better with durable, patented self-
tightening calf closures. Viper Flex Quadpod
shooting sticks were the fi nal companion
from Hammond Country Sporting goods
that are here just in time for the Roebuck
season, giving massive stability to standing
shots with quieter handling than
competitors. They also offer a little more
tracking ability to scan laterally for your
shots as the front rest is a wider U- shape
with a rubber gripper, contrasting with the
butt sitting in a narrower U at the rear.
STIFFEN UP
Javelin bipods, who took last year’s show
stopper prize have again launched a new
product, a full carbon fi bre, multi use tripod
that can also mount cameras and optics as
well as hang a small deer off for gutting.
It’s lighter than many Harris style bipods
and with fully adjustable legs gives the
opportunity for sitting, kneeling or standing
shots and importantly it’s quiet! Light as a
feather, it’s staggeringly robust and stable,
which is the intrinsic secret of the Carbon
material.
New kit in the custom rifl e world was
focussed on the Remington trigger unit
from Devon Custom rifl es that hopes to
overcome increasingly diffi cult importation
of similar units from across the pond. I
have one lined up for review. John Carr from
South Yorkshire showed his Resolution
Actions which easily compete with any
others available from across the globe and
by his side on a shared stand, Steve
Kershaw was showcasing Carbon Wrapped
barrels and their growing popularity in the
lightweight hunting market.
BACK IN TECHY MODE
A chance encounter with Derek Edgar saw
me introduced to Dr. Will Westlake who is
the designer and manufacturer of the new
Macctecc moderators Edgar Brothers is
distributing. They are ultra-compact,
muzzle-mounted, aluminium sporting units,
after having shot one in the meantime, I’m
very impressed in all respects of the
product. My fi nal calls were with York Guns
to briefl y check out the Mossberg range of
Predator/Varmint rifl es in Laminate stocks
that although seemingly cheap in price, are
a defi nite step up from the usual ‘Wal-Mart’
guns they compete with and they are
stylishly designed. If they are accurate, they
should do well as handling and operation
were above expectations. Pete Moore is
doing a test on one this issue!
A LASTING LEGACY
FOR JOHN BERTRAND
After the death of the BSS’s founder John
Bertrand during last year’s show, I can happily
report he has successfully left a lasting legacy
to the shooting community. I met his widow
and she seemed very pleased to see the
show continuing to grow, proving even more
successful with great organisation, hospitality,
car parking, access and general crowd control.
Schmidt & Bender’s stand was a defi nite nod
to the way the show may be heading with the
industry’s big players, but they must remain
loyal to the customers and keep pricing keen
to attract those who want to use their day out
to spend money as well as window shop.
