with built-in cabinetry covering all surfaces and traditional
teak and holly-covered steps, the forepeak provides a well-
finished sleeping environment, while LED spots offer after-
dark illumination, during the day the light dropping in from
the coachroof hatch and the fed in through the side portlights,
create a bright and airy feel, with sight lines expanded by the
headboard mirror.
Returning outside, though narrow at first, the side decks
lead forward to the raised coachroof with its compact double
sunpads, while both side deck and foredeck are enclosed with
high guardrails to keep all the family onboard while underway.
Accessed by steps from the aft cockpit, the flybridge features
an L-shaped banquette to starboard, and an upper helm to port.
The upper helm has a fixed pilot bench, a full swath of tachos
and usefully-positioned multifunction display. The throttles are
set to the right of the wheel and the bow thruster joystick to the
left to allow for a bit of ply when maneuvering.
Sheltered by a collapsible bimini and supported by in-built
speakers to ensure the right atmosphere, while underway the
wind is deflected by a reverse windscreen, but care should be
taken when moving around as the guardrails are stylishly low.
Space behind the banquette in front of the radar arch could be
used for further lounging or furniture, but positioned above the
cockpit it is not suitable for tender launching.
While available in both inboard and outboard versions,
the common consensus normally powers the Oryx 42 with
twin 300hp outboards, while on the 40 Fly a third spot is also
available to hit top speeds of 38 knots. Both stern drive and
shaft drive options are, however, also available with Gulf Craft’s
customer-focused built options. Taking the popular Oryx
compact cruiser to a new level, or should I say ‘height’, the
re-styled Oryx 40 Fly will become a firm favorite both locally
and among Gulf Craft’s extensive international dealerships,
particularly with its ability to be have owner power selection at
point of sale.
