hen looking for a new
motoryacht design, Lagoon
consulted naval architects
VPLP (Van Peteghem-
Lauriot Prévost) and the Nauta Design
studio, and came to the conclusion that the
best solution would be to adapt the efficient
hull shapes of their existing Lagoon 620
sailing catamaran, optimising its proven sea
going qualities for a motoryacht platform,
which was debuted at the Cannes Boat Show
last September.
As such, the underwater profile has seen
the hulls modified in their aft part so as to
maintain a small longitudinal trim incidence
for the hulls to reach a 16-knot speed with a
reduced wake to increase fuel efficiency and
comfort under way. The superfluous keels
have been removed for ease of maneuvering
and to reduce water turbulences, while the
rudder depth has also been reduced.
The twin Volvo D4-260hp engines cruise
at a comfortable 12 knots, with the 16-knot
top speed on tap for that last run to port.
While not on a par with semi-displacement
monohulls, coupling excellent shallow
draft fuel efficiency with a 3,000-litre tank
the 630 does allow for extensive bluewater
cruising capability.
After removing rigging and hardware, the
deck basically remains unchanged, however
without a boom in the way, the flybridge
is totally new feature with re-designed
steering positions, a large folding dining
table to starboard, bar area, superb
sunbathing area forward and a Bimini/hard
top with a double sunroof and, not a choice
on the sailing version, an optional Jacuzzi.
Lagoon’s success, particularly in the
charter market, is due in great part to its
outstanding inside comfort and variety of
interior layouts available. Options such as a
lateral or central galley, and accommodation
in 4, 5 or up to 6 double cabins are continued
through to the motor version, while in
the saloon, only the chart table has been
modified to ensure a perfect adaptation
of the Lagoon 630 to its new career as a
Motor Yacht.
