Yard reputation
Even before getting estimates, both Perera and Ennis suggest
getting recommendations from fellow boaters on yards to
consider, which is one of the few cases in which the buzz at the
dock actually comes in handy. It’s human nature that boat owners
will want to do business with a yard that values and treats their
customers well and with intregrity, an indication of which is that
the yard stands behind their work.
“The industry has changed a lot,” says Ennis. “People used
to just bring their boats in but now everyone wants an estimate
before any work is done. Everyone is cost conscious, but it’s very
diffi cult to estimate before you see the boat. That’s where the
relationship and trust comes in. Word of mouth helps if someone
else has had a good experience with a yard.” For Cable, that
relationship-building contributes to additional work. Ennis says
that about 50 percent of their haul-out clients’ boats have their
hulls waxed in addition to other add-on services.

Combining projects
Even after you’ve found a yard you’re comfortable with to
handle your annual haul-out, unforeseen circumstances may
compel you to change for a season. Scott Stancyzk is the captain
of Catch 22, a 54-foot ’93 Blackwell custom Carolina sportfi sh.
It spends an average of 250 days per year in charter use at Bud
‘n Marys Marina, a family business owned by Scott’s brother,
Richard, in The Florida Keys’ Islamorada. Catch 22’s annual
haul-out is always at Coral Bay Marina just down the road. But in
early October 2015, Stancyzk and Catch 22 were at Flying Fish
Marina in Clarence Town on Long Island in The Bahamas when
Hurricane Joaquin hit. “We were in 130-140 mph winds for 23
hours,” says Stancyzk. “The hardtop was ripped off the boat and
the tower was bent.” The outriggers and curtains were completely
gone. When the hurricane passed and Stancyzk was able to
move the boat, he headed for Billfi sh Marina in Fort Lauderdale.
“Pipewelders builds one of the nicest towers in South Florida—
they’re famous for that. So I combined my annual haul-out with
that.” Pipewelders constructed an entire new tower, hardtop,
curtains, and outriggers, and also provided the complete menu of
haul-out services.
If additional work is required, however, it’s important to fi nd a
yard that is a factory-authorized repair facility for your brand of
boat. As with any work that’s to be done, doing your due diligence
is of utmost importance.
