UNDOCKING WITH WIND OR CURRENT
OFF THE DOCK OR FROM AHEAD
- Use a roving fender to cushion the boat near the stern. Rig a forward quarter
spring line to keep the boat from setting down onto the boat astern. Take the
slack out of the spring line and hold it with a full round turn. Bring all other lines
aboard. - Keep the rudder amidships. Th e elements will push the bow away from the dock.
- When the bow is out far enough, cast off and retrieve the spring line. Th en,
shift into idle forward gear and make sure you are clear of all dangers.

THE DOCK OR FROM ASTERN
- Use a roving fender to cushion the bow. Rig an aft er bow spring line to keep the
boat from moving ahead toward the boat in front of yours. Take the slack out of
the spring line and hold it with a full round turn. Bring all other lines aboard. - Turn the rudder toward the pier.
- Shift the engine into forward idle gear. Twin-screw boats should pivot with
the outboard engine idling forward and the inboard engine in reverse.
When leaving a dock with wind or current from ahead or off the dock, rig a forward
quarter spring line.
