DESIGN TRENDS

Renowned multihull designer Chris White developed the concept of forward doors and cockpits on cruising cats. Some
builders have employed that space for sailhandling, paired with an indoor steering station. On White’s own Atlantic 47
MastFoil (top left), the functional cockpit is arranged to accommodate both the helmsman and the sail trimmers. On the
Leopard 40, however, the opening door forward does not lead to a cockpit but instead serves as a passageway (top right). On
larger cats like the colossal Ipanema 58, space is not an issue, as evident in its wide-open cockpit (bottom).
