It is a shame that the re-run of the Golden Globe Race, which starts in 2018 on the original race’s 50th
anniversary, is likely to feature glass fi bre yachts only, especially as it is billed as a “retro” event, sailed as it was
then, with pre-GPS navigation aids. Classic Boat readers will barely need reminding that all the 1968 boats were
wood except Joshua and Captain Browne, both steel, and English Rose IV and Dytiscus III, both GRP. Yet
entrants for the 2018 event must choose their boats from a narrow list of glass fi bre production cruisers. Metal
or wooden yachts will be considered on a case-by-case basis only. There are plenty of non-GRP designs up to the
challenge, but places are available only on the waiting list now. However, for anyone who knows the 1968 story
backwards, which is all of us, the 2018 race will make fascinating viewing.
