When it comes to the bigger superyachts, some exterior
and interior designers are clearly matches made in heaven

here has been a boom over the
past decade in the production
of larger superyachts – and
an increase in the number
of designers working in this area. Some
333 projects 50m (164ft) and above were
launched from 2007 to 2016. In contrast,
only 387 were launched between 1850
(considered the dawn of superyachting)
and 2006. In total, 93 different exterior
designers worked on projects of over 50m in
the past 10 years, compared to 188 designers
and architects for all other yachts built
before 2007. For interiors, 128 studios
worked on 50m-plus boats in the past
10 years, compared to about 220 companies
for all other yachts built before 2007.
And some exterior-interior design
pairings are clearly more popular than
others. We looked at the top 20 design
pairings on 50m-plus yachts, sorted by total
LOA. Our analysis, right, shows that Tim
Heywood and Laura Sessa were the design
dream team from 2007 to 2016 (partly due
to the success of Amels’ Limited Editions).
Most of the current famous design offices
developed in the 1980s. Before that, exterior
and interior designs were mainly done by
naval architects and shipyards. Designers
have been encouraged into the industry by
the work of pioneers like Jon Bannenberg.
He created a balance of classicism and
avant-gardism, and attracted new
generations of designers to the industry.
“It was in the winter of 1985, in the now
long-defunct Nautical Quarterly, that there
was a reference to BB (before Bannenberg)
and AB (after Bannenberg),” says Dickie
Bannenberg, Jon’s son and company leader
of Bannenberg & Rowell Design.
“Life moves on,” Dickie continues, “and
new ideas are all around – it’s how my dad
would have liked it.” Top 20 pairings sorted by total LOA
