From cashmere socks to fabric
for private jets, Italian brand
Loro Piana has long been a
favorite for the affluent in the
know. What sets it apart for
serious sailors, however, is the
attention to detail that goes into
its materials. Be it the cashmere,
cotton and suede used in this
vest, originally designed for the
Italian riders in the 2014 World
Equestrian Games, or the
innovative Storm System fabric
used in its sailing gear, each

WARDROBE
ESSENTIAL

Consumer studies have shown that we all make
impulsive, even irrational selections when we go
shopping. This holds true for wine, with the appearance
of the label often being a key factor in influencing our
buying decision.
Many wineries go to great efforts to adorn their
bottles with striking labels; most famously, Château
Mouton Rothschild commissioned special labels
by noted artists. But it’s an American wine whose label
I most admire.
Out on the East End of Long Island, in the heart of
the Hamptons, Wölffer Estate makes a range of excellent
wines. The one that catches the eye, however, is the aptly
named Summer In A Bottle. It’s a rosé, and I’ve been an
admirer of Wölffer’s rosés for many years, but this has a
label that is the essence of the season: a specially
designed five color silk-screen profusion of flowers that

Catch this rye

Once a bar staple, then almost completely forgotten, rye
whiskey has lately become one of the most popular
spirits in the country, with sales skyrocketing from
about $15 million in 2009 to $106 million in 2015.
The product that has captured the most attention is
Booker’s Rye. Created by a legendary maker of bourbon,
it was one of the last efforts of the late Booker Noe. With
a high alcohol content – 68.1 per cent – and a long aging
of 13 years, this is a whiskey with real character.
The spirit has extraordinary depth, a complexity of
flavors, and a finish that is both surprising and
gratifying. The well regarded annual guide Jim Murray’s
Whiskey Bible 2017 called it “brain-draining, mind-
blowing,” and pronounced it the World Whiskey of the
Year for 2017. A limited-edition product, Booker’s Rye
is still obtainable. This is a trophy to impress the most
demanding connoisseur.

18ct Cosquez Colombian
emerald and diamond necklace,
$650,000, templestclair.com

Jewelry designer Temple St Clair loves green. She says it’s a
“feel-good color, symbolic of nature, renewal and life.” For
her, emeralds are the “ultimate green.” This emerald
necklace features “gems from the Cosquez mountains
in Colombia,” long considered to produce the world’s
finest emeralds. Characterized by the stones’ “long
elegant shapes,” the necklace took more than three
years to assemble, with each emerald being cut in
the famous lapidaries of Idar-Oberstein in
Germany. Their vivid green hue has a “youthful
appearance,” she says, and dictated a setting
that was “more playful” than the usual
symmetrical arrangement of gems. The
finished necklace reminded the designer
of “sunlight on tropical seas.”
