How goes the world tour?
We are having the most unbelievable trip! We started in Jamaica
with the boat anchored just outside Round Hill Hotel and Villas,
after which we detoured to Fort Lauderdale for some works to be
done, and then went on to Cuba
How was Cuba?
Amazing. We started at Varadero, which is a Canadian resort
town, and a really cute place. The kids swam with dolphins there.
We spent a few days in Havana and got to know some locals and
learned a lot about their culture. We even made it to the famous
Tropicana club one night and I took my 13-year-old daughter
to see the Buena Vista Social Club – they got her on stage to
dance! The old cars are amazing, as is the architecture. It really
does look like it’s from the 1950s. We also explored the south
of Cuba, and went to Cayo Largo where we saw iguanas on a
deserted island. At the Gardens of the Queen marine reserve, we
found an incredible island – just 60ft across. We set up camp
and found lobster, conch, stingrays and lots of fish
Did your Cuban adventure end there?
No, we went on to Cienfuegos, which is a little gem of a city.
I did some long bike rides and saw some of the country. We
visited the Bay of Pigs, where we met a man who had tamed a
bee hummingbird, the smallest species of bird in the world (it’s
about half the size of your finger). It’s the only place in the world
you can find them consistently. The Bay of Pigs is a resort area
with beautiful beaches. We did a day trip to the town of Trinidad,
which looks like a movie set for a Spanish town 100 years ago
Where did you head to next?
We headed to the Cayman Islands, where my daughter did her
first wall dive. After a few days we left for Panama and are now
halfway there. The water is like glass so we have just stopped the
engines 150 miles off the coast of Nicaragua and we’re going for
a swim. Hopefully nothing gets us and this won’t be our last post!

Where have you been cruising?
We’ve just left Curaçao and we’re on the way to Martinique.
Fortunately, the wind has died down – it could have been
very unpleasant
What was Curaçao like?
It was a pleasant surprise. There is a marina in the large inland
waterway, called the Schottegat, which was too shallow for
our draft. We ended up mooring between the two bridges that
span the entrance to the waterway. Overall we thought it was
very clean and quite different from other Caribbean islands.
The people there are nice and polite, and there was a fantastic
market not far from where we were moored that offered great
fruit and vegetables. The capital, Willemstad, is quaint. The local
authorities have been cleaning up the buildings in wonderful
colors – you don’t see the peeled stucco paint you might expect.
It’s clearly a popular destination as there were lots of huge
cruise ships coming and going
Why had you not been there before?
We had not thought of visiting in previous years as nearby
Venezuela was having its problems
Where else have you been?
Prior to Christmas we had some lovely sailing between
St Maarten and the BVIs. We had fantastic winds outbound, but
less so inbound. We’ll be in Martinique for three weeks, then the
next time we’ll be on board is in Bermuda for the America’s Cup
- we’ll stay from May 20 to the end of June. We’re both looking
forward to seeing the competition

Yacht: Oriana
Length: 95' 6"
Year: 1986
Location: Vancouver
How’s the boat?
Oriana is currently undergoing some rather
extensive work, with the installation of new
generators and a rebuild of the cooling
system. We managed to sneak away in
February, though, to attend the Superyacht
Design Symposium in Kitzbühel, Austria.
We loved the ski race, but next year we’ll
bring the right race gear. We had no idea
there would be such good skiers at the
event. We’re a bit competitive, so we’ll
do better in 2018
Any other changes to Oriana planned?
Yes, the work I’m most excited about
is a redesign of the sundeck, which is
currently just used for tender storage. Once
completed when we are at dock or on anchor
and the tenders and toys are in the water,
the area will be turned into the “bistro level”.
There will be outdoor dining under the stars
for up to 14 people and the ability to show
outdoor movies. This will be wonderful when
cruising this summer up in spectacular
