BOAT LIFE

T
he various iterations of Land Rover’s Discovery have become a familiar sight at
marinas and boatyards around the world since its launch in 1989. The first two
models were, essentially, more utilitarian versions of the original Range Rover, the
underpinnings of which lurked beneath the Disco’s businesslike bodywork that featured a
distinctive stepped roof, lots of glass and seating for seven.
These were more likely to be seen towing a trailer sailer to a slipway than delivering the
bronzed and well-dressed to a superyacht – but, as the words “luxury” and “lifestyle” came to
be increasingly conjoined, so Land Rover’s design team was tasked
with taking the Discovery more upmarket.
As a result, the Discovery 3 of 2004 sported an entirely new box-
shaped body which made the car longer, larger and heavier than the
original. But it went down a storm thanks to being more cosseting,
even more capacious and better both on and off-road.
And now there’s the very latest version, the Discovery 5, which
is both lighter than its predecessor yet more luxurious than ever. It
brings the Disco’s looks into line with those of the other vehicles in
the Land Rover/Range Rover stable which design director Gerry
McGovern has made sleeker and more refined across the board.
The Disco 5 will be playing an important role in Britain’s attempt
to repatriate the America’s Cup thanks to the fact that it has been nominated as the official vehicle of Sir Ben
Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR challenge team. The marque’s advanced engineering teams have been involved in
the development of BAR’s foiling catamarans, which will contest the America’s Cup match in Bermuda this
June. As the official transport for not only the team but also the VIP guests attending the event, the new model
is set for some major exposure. In the event of Land Rover BAR bringing home the Auld Mug, a Disco 5 will
probably become the only vehicle to be seen in for any patriotic British superyacht owner.
And, since we’re feeling quietly confident here at Boat International, we suggest you place your order now.
