ospitality is the watchword of this Atlantic Ocean island and there
isn’t a hotel, club, restaurant or bar that hasn’t dusted down its
strainers, jiggers, muddlers, shakers and Old Fashioned glasses in
gleeful anticipation of having the yachting world descend.
No matter where you dock your superyacht and head to – Swizzle Inn
on Bailey’s Bay, Breezes beach bar at Cambridge Beaches, Hamilton
Princess & Beach Club, or the brand new Loren at Pink Beach on the south
shore – you will be drinking rum.
Not only that – you will be drinking Goslings Rum. The brand is all but
synonymous with Bermuda and it’s the official rum of the America’s Cup.
The Gosling family has been blending and distributing the stuff here ever
since James Gosling landed from England in 1806. Today, the seventh
generation of Goslings run the show.
There is no question that the rums are first rate. There are three main
rums in the range, starting with the Goslings Gold Seal. This is delectably
light, mellow and smooth gold rum. Try it is a Bright ’n’ Sunny by pouring
50ml of Gold Seal into a tall ice-filled glass, adding 120ml of ginger ale and
topping with a splash of orange juice.
The Goslings Black Seal is the flagship rum and the essential ingredient
of the famous (and trademarked) Dark ’n’ Stormy. Pour 140ml of Goslings
Stormy Ginger Beer into a tall, ice-filled glass and top up with 50ml of
Black Seal. As the Goslings say, “lime optional; enjoyment mandatory”.
If sipping rum is your thing, you’ll love Goslings Family Reserve Rum.
It’s the same fine blend as the Black Seal but aged for 16 to 20 years in oak
barrels and presented in a
wax-covered champagne
bottle. It’s complex, rich and
luscious. If you know of a
better way of seeing your boat
come in, pray let me know. B
