L

illy Barclay does not come across as the relaxing type. Despite
spending most of her youth on or near the sea due to an upbringing
in Denmark, and much of her adult life holidaying either on the
ocean or near it, thanks to a yacht-owning husband and three sea-loving
offspring, she seems more energised by what she calls the “planet’s second
lung” than calmed by it.
No sooner had she finished her key role on A Plastic Ocean – an award-
winning documentary that focuses on the global plastic pollution problem

  • earlier this year, than she conceived her next project: a foundation that
aims to support those creating solutions to combat the manifest challenges
the ocean faces today, from plastic pollution to over-fishing.
Founded with four close family friends, all fellow philanthropists, the
Ocean Family Foundation (OFF) intends to back a wide range of initiatives
and among them is a Boat International event, to be held in London in
June next year. The day aims to give a platform to people, charities and
organisations leading the way in ocean conservation, and connect them
to a like-minded audience, via a day of talks, panel discussions, exhibitions
    and networking.
“The reason I am so excited about this day is that it will bring
a greater awareness of the endeavours of all those working in this field,”
Barclay says. “Boat International’s ambition is to create a fantastic festival of
the sea, where people can gather and share stories, and that is very much in
line with what we want our foundation to help facilitate.”

Facing up to
marine challenges

To commemorate
the love and
appreciation that
its founder Dr Max
Huber had for the
ocean – as well as
the part marine
life had to play in
the creation of its
iconic moisturiser

  • Crème de la Mer
    has for many years
    released a limited
    edition version of
    its signature cream
    in aid of World
    Oceans Day. This
    year the brand is
    taking things one
    step further with the
    foundation of the
    La Mer Blue Heart
    Oceans Fund. The
    fund will focus on
    supporting marine
    protected areas and
    the campaign to
    put 30 per cent of
    the oceans under
    protection by
    2030. It will work
    with recognised
    ocean conservation
    charities, explorers
    and advocates as
    well as hosting
    beach clean-ups,
    education initiatives
    and other marine
    conservation efforts.
