starboard and drop into
the deck, the amount of
natural light is enough
to justify the ‘Open’ in
GTO. As an option, the
saloon windows will also
drop down into the deck,
but the standard fl oor-
to-ceiling design is
so striking that the
extra weight and
complication of the
sliding mechanisms
doesn’t seem worth it.
The limited time and benign conditions of our brief test make
it diffi cult to come to any concrete conclusions on the Targa 63
GTO. It takes more than an hour or two to get beneath the skin
of something this big, this complex and this important. The
interior was still waiting for some panels to be fi tted and carpet
to be laid below decks along with a number of other aesthetic
fi nishing touches. The areas that were fi nished looked great
but it was hard to get a sense of how the boat hung together
as a whole to make a truly informed comment on interior fi nish.
What is undeniable is that 12 months ago, this boat was no
more than a drawing on a piece of paper, so the fact that it is
here at all in the given timeframe is an achievement bordering
on the miraculous, and be it through luck or judgement, the 63
GTO currently occupies a space devoid of direct rivals. We’ll
need to spend more time on board a fi nished boat to determine
just how good it really is but we’ve seen enough to know that
Fairline is back in the big league, and not a moment too soon.
