I won’t repeat the words that spilled from my mouth when I saw
the rendering of Fairline’s new 33ft F-Line concept but you can
take it as read that they wouldn’t have passed the 9pm watershed.
I reckon it’s the best-looking boat I’ve seen in years – prettier than
an Aston Martin AM37, sportier than a Pershing 5X and more
progressive than a Rivamare. I really, really want one.
It’s a remarkable statement of intent from a company that less
than two years ago was languishing in administration with its
reputation in tatters. At the time, I thought the best we could
hope for was that a volume builder would buy the brand, pick
over the bones and badge-engineer a few models overseas in
the hopes of cashing in on the name. When I heard that it had
actually been bought by a couple of Russians who planned to
restart manufacturing in the UK, I wanted to believe in it even
though my instinct was telling me it wouldn’t end well. What
could they know about building boats profitably in the UK when
at the time, not even Sunseeker or Princess were making money?
I couldn’t be more delighted to admit how wrong I was. The first
hint of that came when I returned to the factory a few months later
to find a small but committed team of boat enthusiasts who cared
about their staff, their suppliers and above all, their customers. They
showed me the first sketches of the Targa 63 GTO and promised me
it would be at the Cannes Yachting Festival the following year. True
to their word, it was unveiled last month to a rapturous crowd.
In fact, we’d already been testing it the day before, when deputy
editor Jack Haines joined the very first 63 GTO for a shakedown
blast. Being so fresh out of the box, it wasn’t quite the finished article
but we’ll run a full test of that at a later date. It does prove beyond
all doubt that Fairline is able to deliver on its promises. So when it
says it’s going to build a new 33ft sportsboat, you’ll
forgive me if my language gets a little fruity.
