As the dark horse of Scandi design capitals
Oslo has plenty to oer fans of pared-back
style. The city is split into east and west
sides with Oslo West oering the best in
shopping and food. Bygdøy allé in the district
of Frogner is a hotspot for interiors shops.
Further east get a slice of old Oslo at Lorry
Restaurant which has played host to the
cityâs writers and poets since 1887 (lorry.
no). Among the dishes on oer look out for
Nordic specialities such as reindeer burger
and skagen a Nordic dish of smoked salmon
prawns and arctic roe on toast. The restaurant
is also known for serving 128 kinds of beer.
One of the most famous paintings in
the world The Scream by Edvard Munch
is on display at the National Gallery
(nasjonalmuseet.no). The Modernist painter
and printmaker grew up in Oslo and left his
collection to the city when he died in 1944.
The gallery is also home to other important
works including paintings by the French
Impressionists. To appreciate the richness and
variety of Munchâs
work visit the
Munch Museum

no). For a thrilling
step back in time
the Viking Ship
Museum (khm.
uio.no) is a Viking treasure trove
containing some of the best preserved ships
and hauls from tombs.
A treasure of a dierent sort is the Villa
Stenersen a gem of Modernist architecture.
Designed by one of the countryâs leading
architects Arne Korsmo it was built for art
collector Rolf Stenersen whose collection
still hangs in the building. Tours in English
take place on Sundays but must be booked in
advance (nasjonalmuseet.no/villa-stenersen).

the museum devoted to playwright Henrik
Ibsen which features beautiful 19th-century
