ithout
creativity
there is no
culture without design there is chaosâ
tweeted the designer Sebastian Conran
some years ago. Itâs a belief that informs
every detail of the Bayswater home
he shares with his wife actress and
voiceover artist Gertrude Thoma.
From the blinds in the bedroom to
the reconfiguration of the open plan
ground floor there is no part of the
house that has escaped the designerâs
careful consideration.
Sebastian had known about the
Victorian villa since childhood. âMy
stepmotherâs sister lived here and Iâd
always loved its large garden and the
ground floor space.â In December 2003
when he heard a sale had fallen through
he didnât hesitate to put in an oer.

TOP The wall in the back drawing room displays a collection of work that Sebastian designed and collected
during his days working for The Clash in the Seventies. The Corbusier âLC4â chaise longue and the Karuselli
âLoungeâ chair display the coupleâs love of classic design ABOVE Sebastian Conran relaxes at home
