T
he Scarborough Competition finally took place on the 23rd of September, after the call was made to cancel the
original date the weekend before due to bad weather and big seas. This year has seen a change in organisers as
due to other commitments. Ian Pickering felt it was time to hand over the reins to someone new, and luckily for
the northern area Neil Hogg agreed to take over. Neil is a local lad, a first-class kayak angler and is very well
respected, so, no body better to do the job.
Once the thumbs up had been given on the Friday afternoon that the
Competition would go ahead, kayak anglers from all over the north and east
descended on Scarborough south landing. Once everyone was registered
and safety brief given a good number of guys launched with fingers crossed.
Once out on the water the stiff southerly breeze and big tide wasn’t going to
make fishing easy for anyone, with coloured water it was going to be big
baits at anchor as the drift made lure fishing hard work. Within the first few
hours the lack of big fish was evident, but the species being caught made up
for this, seeing wrasse, plaice, whiting and a good-sized thornback,
unfortunately this is a heaviest fish competition so only cod and pollack was
to be weighed in.
By mid-afternoon with everyone was back on the beach safe it was
apparent that most of the competitors had found the conditions
challenging and had struggled to hook into anything worthy to weigh in,
so with aching muscles we all headed up to the local angling club for the
results. Sure enough, Neil Hogg had done it again managing to winkle out a
fantastic sized pollack coming in at 6lb 2oz to take top spot, well done Neil.SCARBOROUGH
