Our US correspondent, Dana Benner,
gives us some ideas on his ideal
Christmas gifts
S
altwater anglers are no different no matter on which side of The Pond you are on. We all want the latest gear
but, more importantly, gear that works. With that thought in mind, I have put together a very short list (I could
always make it longer) of the items I would like to find under the tree.
My wife and daughter are always asking me what I would like for Christmas and even if I tell them I still get a tie (I don’t
wear ties), underwear and socks (not the good socks that keep your feet warm). Maybe they will pay attention this year,
though I doubt it. When it comes to fishing, many people don’t realize that it is much more than putting a lure on the
line. There are other things that go into a good fishing trip, like cooking your catch, and for that reason some of those
things are on my list.
Quantum Smoke Inshore rod
Nothing ruins a day on the water more than a rod and reel
that fails on you. I know, as it has happened to me more than
one time. I’ve also had gear that was either too large or too
small for the fishing I was doing. You have to be prepared for
what is biting, not what you hope is biting. So, the first item on
my list is the Quantum Smoke Inshore rod with the matching
reel. Measuring 7 feet long, this one-piece medium-heavy rod
is tougher than it looks. It has a light tip for detecting those
subtle bites, like from flounder, yet has the backbone to haul a
fluke off the bottom, fight a bluefish or even a striped bass.
The rod is rated for lures up to 3/8oz. and the reel is capable
of hold line up to 14lb test. http://www.quantumfishing.com.
Paleo Meals to Go.
Days on the boat can be long and cold, especially if
the fish aren’t biting. On those days the last thing I
want is a cold
sandwich. The
next item on my
Christmas list is
a case of Paleo
Meals to Go.
There are many
freeze-dried
meals on the
market, but
Paleo Meals to
Go are gluten
free, soy free
and are actually
really good.
I always have a
few of these
meals with me
whenever I
venture out (that’s why I need a case). Just add some
hot water to the pouch and you are all set.

GetSome 1000
The next item on my list is a case of GetSome1000. This
product helps to keep my reels working, even during the
roughest conditions. GetSome1000 is perfectly safe
to use on plastic as it contains no petroleum or silicone
products. It is long-lasting, non-toxic and leaves
no odour, so you can apply it right onto your line. It
protects your gear from saltwater damage and dispels
moisture. I use it on my gear prior to, and after, every
trip, which means I go through a lot of it.
