Maximum tumor dimension (in millimeter) (see Note 6).
Distance of tumor to nearest proximal or distal margin (in
millimeter).
Distance of tumor to circumferential margin (in millimeter)
(see Note 7).
Involvement of adjacent structures (see Note 8).
Presence or absence of Barrett mucosa (see Note 9).
Any additional specimens.
Nature and site of all blocks.


  1. Ink the circumferential esophageal margins.

  2. Dissect the specimen as follows:
    The following sections should be submitted (please refer
    to Fig. 2 ):



  • Tumor, at least four blocks including:
    Deepest point of invasion.
    Tumor to closest circumferential margin [ 8 , 9 ].
    Interface of tumor with adjacent mucosa.

  • Esophagogastric junction and squamocolumnar junction.

  • Representative uninvolved stomach and esophagus (usu-
    ally represented in margin blocks).

  • Proximal resection margin.

  • Distal resection margin.

  • All lymph nodes (see Note 10).
