most essential elements that indicate trends in consumer tastes. Once the
hedonic price analysis is established and validated, it is a time- and cost-
efficient tool for regular follow-up surveys on consumer preferences. By
attaching economic weights to relevant quality characteristics, the he-
donic price analysis provides a sound basis for priority setting in breed-
ing. Furthermore, it can be used to create economic selection indices
reflecting the expected preferences of consumers for any new product
or variety.
