The Modern Denial of Human Nature, by Ste-
ven Pinker (Penguin Books, new york, 2002), is
a well-written exposition and defense of evo-
lutionary psychology, for a general audience.
A very readable, convincing treatment of
culture and human evolution is Not by Genes
Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evo-
lution, by P. J. Richerson and R. Boyd (univer-
sity of Chicago Press, 2005), leading figures in
this field. Simon Reader has compiled a useful
annotated bibliography on the evolution of
cognition at http://www.oxfordbibliographies.com/
