he Indian auto wholesales
grew 35.39 percent to
1,666,646 units in December
compared to 1,221,969
units dispatched from factories
across segments last year during
the month, according to the recently-
released report by Society of Indian
Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
SIAM has also forecast a growth of
nine percent for passenger vehicles,
13 percent for commercial vehicles,
seven percent for three-wheelers and
12 percent for two-wheelers during
the financial year 2018.
Passenger vehicle (PV) wholesales
also grew 5.22 percent to 239,712
units as against 227,823 units in
the same period a year ago. Utility
vehicles (UV) wholesale surged 15.03
percent to 67,073 units in December
compared to 58,308 units sent out of
factories in the same month last year.
Passenger car (PC) wholesales fell
0.18 percent to 158,326 units in
December compared to 158,617 units
in the same month previous year.
Van dispatches grew 31.34 percent
at 14,313 units in December 2017
compared to 10,898 units dispatched
in the same month a year ago.
The commercial vehicle segment
grew 52.62 percent at 82,362 units as
opposed to 53,966 units last with the
goods carriers out-pacing passenger
vehicles in both heavy and medium
and light categories.
While the passenger vehicle in
the medium and heavy category
witnessed a decline of 20.42 percent
to 2,834 units as compared to last
year’s 3,561, the segment in the light
vehicle category posted a minor
growth of 2.29 percent with 3,216
units as against 3,144 last year.
Goods carrier in the medium and
heavy category and light vehicle
category grew 90.38 percent and
41.64 percent, respectively. In the
medium and heavy category, the sale
of goods carriers reached 36,605
units against last year’s 19,227 units
and in light category it touched
39,707 units vis-à-vis last year’s
28,034 units.
Scooter took the lead in the two-
wheeler segment with a strong
growth of 52.05 percent at 432,429
units in December this year over
284,405 units in the same month the
previous year. Motorcycle wholesales
grew 40.31 percent to 788,156 units
in December this year over 561,710
units in the like month previous year.
While Moped’s wholesales grew
marginally by 4.44 percent to 67,007
units over 64,161 units in the previous
year same month. Three-wheeler
wholesale surged 90.54 percent to
56980 units in December this year
compared to 29904 units in the same
period a year ago.
April-December Sales
The sale of passenger vehicles grew
by 8.13 percent in April-December
2017 over the same period last
year. Within the passenger vehicles,
passenger cars, utility vehicles
and vans grew by 4.19 percent,
19.43 percent and 6.86 percent
respectively, in April-December 2017
over the same period last year.
The overall commercial vehicle
segment grew by 15.19 percent in
April-December 2017 as compared
to the same period last year. Medium
and heavy commercial vehicles
(M&HCVs) increased by 9.27 percent
and light commercial vehicles grew
by 19.29 percent in April-December
2017 over the same period last year.
Three-wheeler sales grew 7.89
percent in April-December 2017 over
the same period last year. Within the
three-wheelers, passenger carrier
and goods carrier sales registered
a growth of 8.25 percent and 6.39
percent, respectively in April-
December 2017 over April-December
2016.
Two-wheeler sales registered a
growth of 11.76 percent in April-
December 2017 over the same period
last year. Within the two-wheelers
segment, scooters and motorcycles
grew by 18.52 percent and 9.77
percent respectively, while mopeds
declined by 6.15 percent in April-
December 2017 over April-December
2016.
Exports
In April-December 2017, overall
automobile exports increased by
13.01 percent. Two and three-wheeler
segments registered a growth of
17.75 percent and 30.27 percent,
respectively, while passenger vehicles
and commercial vehicles declined
by 3.40 percent and 18.10 percent,
respectively in April-December 2017
over the same period last year.
