Auto Parts Asia — February 2018

T

he Indian automotive industry, considered one of the fastest expanding in
the world, does not appear to be one, when viewed in terms of corporate
participation in the Auto Expo-Motor show 2018. Once described as one of the
largest auto shows in the world for the number of footfalls, the show of late is
losing sheen. The list of exhibitors this year does not have such prominent names as
Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, Fiat, Ford, Harley Davidson, Volkswagen, Volvo, and
many others.
At least seven passenger car manufacturers, five of the commercial vehicle players and a
couple of two-wheeler companies are keeping off the show. The common thread among
them is the lack of adequate returns from participation. Information dissemination about the
biennial show is said to be inadequate with less rewarding take-aways for the participating
companies.
The lukewarm response to the Auto Expo-Motor Show, both by the exhibitors and business
visitors, began with the shifting of its venue to Greater Noida from Pragati Maidan in 2014.
The continuation of the Components Show in Pragati Maidan added to the confusion and
consternation of all the stakeholders. As all information is available on the internet, those
interested choose the most convenient option.
However, the collective Indian automotive industry has to get involved in the most important
expositions with a vision and mission to project the country’s prowess to the world. They
have to shed the bottomline perspective and commit to participate and make the shows
appealing and very successful.
The Cover Story of this edition is on Lucas Indian Service, a home-grown company
operating in the country for more than eight decades, and its preparedness to face the
disruptions in the industry. We have a feature on MG Composites which has designed and
developed with advanced composite materials the body for an electric three-wheeler. In
addition, there is an interview with the President of Delphi’s Global Aftermarket, and Special
Reports on MAN Trucks India and Magna International.

Happy Reading.
