A

utomakers now have a
radar option that leapfrogs
the competition as Magna
unveiled its ICON RADAR
at the North American International
Auto Show (NAIAS). Setting a
new standard in high-resolution
automotive radar, ICON RADAR
incorporates advanced technology
used by the US military to provide
precise detection, extensive range
and high resiliency. Magna has
been collaborating with Uhnder,
a technology start-up currently in
stealth mode, in engineering and
product development to help bring
this technology to market in 2019.
ICON RADAR helps close the gap
between level 3 and level 5 to reach
full reliable autonomous driving.
With a range of more than 300
metres, Magna’s ICON RADAR

continuously scans the environment
in four dimensions (distance, height,
depth and speed). The advanced
radar technology can detect and
track almost 100 times more
objects than competitive systems
and individually classifies them. It
can detect and communicate to
the vehicle a rich topography of
static objects such as guard rails,
road debris and speed bumps, and
many tracked moving objects such
as vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians
and pets. “Magna has identified
some of the world’s most advanced
technologies and ‘auto-qualified’
them for use in the auto industry.
Our ICON RADAR takes the best of
military technology and improves
on it for automotive use – taking a
significant step forward toward full
autonomy,” Swamy Kotagiri, Magna
Chief Technology Officer, said.

Having the ability to distinguish
smaller “objects” such as children
and bicyclists in close proximity to
larger, more easily detectable things
such as parked cars and moving
trucks is critical to the enhancement
of safety ADAS features such as
Automatic Emergency Braking and
to further the progress toward full
autonomous driving. It is this critical
data and capability that keeps the
software systems with information
to improve vehicle intelligence and
safety systems.

Magna’s ICON RADAR continuously
scans its full environment 50
times faster than the time it takes
a human to blink an eye, which
helps a vehicle make instantaneous
decisions in response to complex
surroundings.

ongfeng Auto Parts
has contributed its
activities in the field
of compressors and
compressed air handling to the
joint venture between Dongfeng
and Knorr-Bremse.The joint venture
between Knorr-Bremse, a leading
manufacturer of air braking systems
and system supplier for commercial
vehicles, and Dongfeng, China’s
leading manufacturer of commercial
vehicles, was established in 2015.
Initially, Knorr-Bremse Dongfeng
Electronic &Technology (DETC)
Commercial Vehicle Braking
Technology Co., Ltd. focused
on the production of mechanical
compressed air valves and
complete Anti-Lock Braking
Systems (ABS).

With effect fromJanuary 1, 2018,
Dongfeng Auto Parts (Group) Co.
Ltd. has contributed its compressor

business and associated activities
to the joint venture.

“Dongfeng and Knorr-Bremse
complement each other perfectly,
with Knorr-Bremse contributing its
extensive product expertise and
Dongfeng its in-depth knowledge of
the market,” Chen Xinglin, General
Manager of Dongfeng Auto Parts,
said.
“Since the joint venture was
launched the company has shown
excellent performance,” Peter Laier,
Member of the Executive Board
of Knorr-Bremse responsible for
the Commercial Vehicle Systems
Division, said.

“In close cooperation with Dongfeng
we are constantly optimizing our
products to meet the specific
requirements of the Chinese market.
The expanded cooperation with
Dongfeng Auto Parts will help
launch adapted solutions to make

Chinese commercial vehicles safer,
smarter, and more environment-
friendly,” he said.

Along with changes to commercial
vehicle laws and regulations in
China, the government’s efforts
to promote the efficiency and
safety of commercial vehicles have
reached a new level. The extended
cooperation between Dongfeng
and Knorr-Bremse will provide full
development support for domestic
commercial vehicle manufacturers
to meet effectively the growing
demands of Chinese market
customers. The Chinese truck
market is showing rapid growth.
Following on from the relatively
moderate revenue growth of
around six percent in 2016 against
2015,production and sales in
the first half of 2017 surged by
approximately 20 percent year-on-
year.
