from over 40 in both Xiji and Majuqiao as enrolments have shrunk. Figures 2.4
and 2.5 show how enrolments in grade 7, 8 and 9 have been falling.
In 1990 attrition was an issue at junior secondary. About 14 % appeared to drop
out before completion. This problem seems to be resolved with almost all those
who enrol completing the cycle in both districts. The number of overage students
