a firm grip on the imaginations of the average young city dweller and
catered to the entertainment needs of the youth. Moreover, Hausa video
films also provided those who dared to venture into the field of acting with
a new framework for embodying difference. For the time being, the future
of the Babule adepts was to remain open, but it seemed as if their signifi-
cance, and likewise the prominence of live performance in Hausa popular
culture, was diminishing at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
