HAIR, THERE, EVERYWHERE
Celebrity hair designer and world president of Intercoiffure Mondial, Klaus
Peter Ochs talks about the changes in the hair industry, latest trends and more
BY CHARU SHARMA

You’ve been associated with the
hair industry for almost four
decades. Has it changed?
Tremendously! When I started off, it
was all very simple, but now trends
change even before you know it. Hair
has become a strong expression of
change, rebellion, confidence and
much more. There has been a silent
revolution of sorts. At the same time,
a score of extremely talented people has
been opting for hairdressing as a career,
which is great.

And what about the hair industry
in India?
India is a growing market for
hairstylists – or designers as I like to
call them. Many international salons
have arrived here, bringing with them
new techniques. But there is no central
body that holds everyone together. By
means of Intercoiffure Mondial India,
we want to unite all hairstylists and
help them grow.

I

IN SESSION

What are the most popular
hairstyles for men and women
around the world currently?
For gentlemen, the brushed
up hairstyle, side part pampadour,
angular fringe and bit pop crop are
extremely popular. And for ladies,
softened pixie, graduated bob, blunt
lob, tousled layers and long layers with
soft bangs are in.

And what about hair colour?
Coloured hair is very popular these
days, and people are experimenting
with shades of blue and pink.

What role does social media
play in deciding trends?
The influence of social media and
internet has changed the approach
of the younger generation towards
hair styling and dressing. Earlier, if
something became popular in one
part of world, it would take years for
it to reach elsewhere. But now, all of it
happens in a fraction of a second. You
click a picture, share it online, and the
world knows about it. This is also the
reason why people are more willing
to experiment.

Do you think Indians are making
bolder choices now?
India is very traditional when it comes
to hair styling since most women here
prefer to keep their hair long and
dark. But thanks to the influence of
the Internet, an increasing number
of people is moving away from the
traditional look to follow what is en
vogue and fashionable. From shorter
hair to streaks and colour – I see
change everywhere now.

Your haircare philosophy...
If you cook, and the ingredients don’t
complement each other, your food
won’t taste good. The same is the case
with your hair! If you don’t have the
right information about products and
use random combinations, your hair
will never be healthy. Take advice from
someone who can tell you what is right
for your hair. The hairdresser is like
a doctor for your hair, and he knows
what’s best for you.
