wise. They were published in a combined edition as
Crimson Spear(1988). Frost next wrote a very fine
science fiction novel, The Pure Cold Light(1993), but
his next fantasy novel was long delayed, appearing fi-
nally in 2002. Fitcher’s Brides, which is based on the
fairy tales about Bluebeard, focuses on a 19th-cen-
tury end of the world cult whose members are begin-
ning to hear bodiless voices. The leader of the unit,

an obsessed preacher, has a habit of making his wives
disappear, and his latest has to use all of her wits to
escape the fate he has planned for her.
Frost also wrote a number of short stories, the
best of which are his occasional barbed horror sto-
ries such as “That Blissful Height” (1996) and
“The Girlfriends of Dorian Grey” (2000). He is
long overdue for a collection.
