Three members of thede-

championSharks were named
NHL All-Stars on Tuesday.
Forward Joe Pavelski, de-
fenseman BrentBurns and
goalie Martin Jones will play in
the Jan. 29 game inLos Ange-
les. Sharks head coach Peter
DeBoer will coach the Pacific
Division team.
This is Burns’ fourth All-
Star selection, the second for
Pavelski, and the first forJones.
Chicago led the league with
four players chosen.
The formatagain will be a
3-on-3 tournament featuring a
team from each of the NHL’s
four divisions.The pla yers also
will compete in askills compe-
titionJan. 28.
The rosters for the game are
brimming with top-shelf talent,though they lack an unusual
fan-picked favorite likeJohn
Scott.
The Pacific Divisionwon the
tournament lastyear, but the
weekendwas dominatedby the
unlikelystory of Scott.The
journeyman enforcer scored
two goals andwas voted the
MVP after an equally improb-

voting rules this season to
reduce thechances of a similar
situation,adding stip ulations
that players had to be on their

time aroundwere Pittsburgh’s
Sidney Crosby, Edmonton’s

Although somefans were
angeredby the rule change,
major sports leagues are
searching for balance between
encouragingfan participation
in All-Starevents and trivializ-
ing thoseshowcases withvote
manipulation and organized
silliness.
The rosters include many
recognizable names, including
AlexOvechkin,Evgeni Malkin,John Tavares, ErikKarlsson
and Chicago teammatesPat-
rick Kane, JonathanToews,
DuncanKeith and Corey Craw-
ford.
McDavid, the NHL’s 19-year-
old leading scorer with 48
points, is headed to his first
All-StarGame after missing
last season’s with a broken
collarbone. Crosby, rig ht be-
hind McDavid with 44 points,
surprisingly hasn’t played in an
All-StarGame since his second
NHL season in 2007, missing
four subsequent selections
because of injuries.
The coa ches will be Colum-
bus’ John Tortorella,Minneso-
ta’s Bruce Boudreau,Montre-
al’s Mich el Therrien and De-

Halfway through the season,
Mikkel Boedker managed to
double hisgoal-scoring total in
one game.
Boedker scored threegoals
for his fourth career hat trick to
lead theSharks to a 5-3 victory
over the Edmonton Oilers on
Tuesday night.
“A game like that,when you
score onyour firstshift, you’re
going to feelgood thewhole
game.They camemy way to-
day. Three good goals,” Boedk-
er said.“After struggling and
not producing,you al ways feel
pressure.Now you ha ve to
expect togo out anddo the
things I’m relied on todo.”
Sharks head coach Peter
DeBoer saidgetting the27-year-
old going again will bekey to
his team’s second-half success.
“That’s whatwe need from
him,” DeBoer said. “Hewas
playingwell before Christmas,
and we knew these types of
gameswere coming.He’s in for
a big second half, andwe need
him.”
BrentBurns andLogan
Couture also scored for the
Sharks, who won ba ck-to-back
games after losing three in a
row. Martin Jones stopped 33
shots.
Drake Caggiu la, Matthew
Benning and Oscar Klefbom
scored for the Oilers, losers of
two straight. CamTalbot fin-
ished with 23 saves.
Burns’ pointshot through
traffic gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead
with 18 seconds remaining in
the opening period.It was
Burns’ 16thgoal of the season.
Boedker then scored twice
6½ minutesapart in the second
to gi ve San Jose a three-goal
lead. Boedker completed the
hat trickat 8:55 with a tip-in
from in front to makeit 4-1. It
was his second hat trickagainst
the Oilers.His first three hat
tricks camewhile hewas play-
ing for Arizona.
Benning, with his second
careergoal, got the Oilers back
in it 22 seconds into the third,
and Klefbom’s slap shot off a
face-off2:23 later pulled the
Oilers to4-3.
Couture put theSharks back
up by two at 5:06, as the re-
bound of hisshot went off hisleg and inwhile hewas crash-
ing the net.
The Sharks took a1-0 lead
1:39 into the opening period as
Boedkergot to a rebound and
lifted the puckover the sprawl-ing Talbot, who was making
his NHL-leading 38thstart of
the season.
