Turing, rather more practically, typed his own letters at the computer keyboard, making use
of the slash symbol to produce punctuation and crude formatting. He printed these out and
dropped them into the post. One was to Robin Gandy concerning his PhD viva.^91 It began:

EARLIER////


Trust Turing to be the first person on earth to deal with his correspondence by word-processor.
He and Strachey also began to explore the possibilities of the computer as a musical instrument,
as explained in Chapter 23.
