in his life and art, he also suffered from them, resisted them, and parodied
them. In writing this book I have hoped to convey the impression that such
oscillations represent not just contradictions in Dickens’s ideological stances,
but deeply human, idiosyncratic aspects of a man who could write like no
one before or since.
