August is high summer and everything is in full flower; across the Mediterranean, the scent of
basil fills the air, the fragrance of summer. Sweet basil oil (ocimum basilicum) is made from the
flowering tops and leaves of the basil plant. It is a lovely summer oil and is known as the holiday
oil, and a vital part of any summer first aid kit.
Place one drop only on a tissue and inhale deeply to help relieve motion sickness when
travelling; do the same for any jet lag. It works very quickly to help alleviate symptoms, so don’t
keep inhaling or you can become too spaced out. It also makes a very good insect repellent. Mix
one drop of basil oil with two drops of tea tree and place in a bottle of distilled water and spray
liberally. For wasp stings, place one drop of basil oil in some olive oil and massage around the
affected area to help reduce inflammation.
Basil oil is lovely to use in summer meditations. A couple of drops only in a diffuser will
produce the scent of summer whilst removing any negativity, providing you with a completely
clear mind. Basil oil will also heighten your wisdom and enable you to find complete balance
during your practice, which ultimately is what yoga is all about.
Use basil oil sparingly and with caution. Can cause skin irritation.
High doses may be carcinogenic especially those basils that contain
significant amounts of methyl chavicol. Avoid during pregnancy.
