Warning sign
It’s true yoga can improve your life and help ease those aches and pains, but it can also
lead to injury, says a new study by the University of Sydney. The research assessed
more than 350 people who attended yoga classes at two studios in New York in the
USA. It found that yoga caused musculoskeletal pain, mostly in the arms, in more than
10% of participants. Yoga also exacerbated 21% of existing injuries. “Yoga may be a
bit more dangerous than previously thought,” said lead researcher Evangelos Pappas.
“Our study found that the incidence of pain caused by yoga is more than 10% per year,
which is comparable to the rate of all sports injuries combined among the physically
active population.”
Hindu hotel
Mandapa, a luxury Ritz-Carlton resort in Indonesia, has a century old Hindu temple on its
compound, where guests are invited to join in during ceremonies. The hotel, in Ubud, Bali,
a popular yoga destination, is a great place to get up close and personal to the island’s
traditions. “The charm of this hotel lies not only in its spiritual and cultural richness, but
in the joy of simply letting go,” the Ritz-Calrton website states. Yoga classes, held in the
river-facing pavilion or on the rice paddy-field platforms, also offer a unique experience
at the boutique resort. Sounds amazing, when do we go? Not so fast! The experience will
cost you: one night’s stay at the plush hotel could set you back $5,000.
