November–December
Loi Krathong
Festival of Lights
Thailand
People gather around lakes,
rivers and canals to set
afloat hundreds of lotus-
shaped, decorated baskets
with candles and flowers.
The traditional vessel
was made with a piece of
bark from a banana tree.
Night markets will fill the
streets, and song and dance
performances are held. The
fireworks display and the
illuminated float procession
are also something to look
forward to.
Surin Elephant
Ro u n d u p
Surin, Thailand
Since the 1960s, an
elephant festival has
been held to celebrate
these gentle giants, but
it was actually started
due to the decline in the
value of elephants, as
mahouts began to rely
on entertainment as a
means of generating
income. Tourists can view
a parade of more than 200
elephants. There are also
cultural performances
and shows.
