is a wider variations in non-985Us than in 985Us, which means that the
between-university gap on TE is much greater among non-985Us.
4.2.5 HSS Disciplines.................................
Based on the full sample results of HSS disciplines in Sect.4.1.1, we aggregate the
data by university types, and compare the differences on HSS research production
efficiency between the two types.
Table4.14presents the numbers and proportions of DEA-efficient units in
985Us and non-985Us. It can be seen from Table4.14, the number of
DEA-efficient units of 985Us steadily increases, with a minimum of 3 (or 8% of
total) in 2006, and a maximum of 5 (or 14% of total) in 2010. The number of
efficient units in non-985Usfirst increases and then decreases, with the maximum of
3 (or 4%) in 2007. According to thefive-year mean data in the last column,
compared with the production frontier of full sample, the efficient proportion of
985Us is higher than that of non-985Us, with a difference around 7.4%. Generally
speaking, both 985Us and non-985Us have a relatively low level of efficient pro-
portion, and most of universities need to improve their research efficiency.
As Table4.15presents, in 2006–2010, the means of TE scores for 985Us and
non-985Us are around 0.40–0.57 and 0.29–0.37 respectively, so the performance of
985Us is better than that of non-985Us (see Fig.4.7). According to the SDs of TE
scores, the SDs of TE of non-985Us are lower than that of 985Us, which means
there is a wider variations in 985Us than in non-985Us.
