obviousfluctuations during thefive years, which to some extent reflects the
instability of TFP growth mechanism of HSS research productions in 211Us. From
the long-term perspective, this instability results into the stagnation of research
productivity.
In order tofind the reason of TFP change, we decompose Malmquist-TFP index
into TC index and TEC index. According to the decomposition results of TFP, we
canfind that TC is the major source of the TFP improvement of HSS research in
211Us, while the decline of TEC offsets this positive effect of TC.
Through more detailed analysis, we canfind that though TC is the major source
of TFP growth, itsfluctuations are also very significantly. It can be seen from the
results that, in 2006–2007, 2007–2008, and 2009–2010, TC index decreases all
along, except the unique and prompt rise in 2008–2009. Owing to this rise as high
as 88.6%, thefive-year TC average of HSS research in 211Us reaches 6.8%. By
contrast, the growth rates of TEC index in 2006–2007, 2007–2008, and 2009– 2010
were 14.8, 22.1 and 6.5% respectively, but its plunge in 2008–2009 results into the
final negative growth (−6.4%) for thefive years. We further decompose TEC into
PTEC index and SEC index as mentioned before. Coinciding with what happened
to TEC index, both PTEC index and SEC index experience their plunges in 2008–
2009, reduced by 31.8 and 24.5% respectively. To SEC index, its plunge is
moderated by improvements in other periods, giving itself afive-year average
growth rate of 2%. However, to PTEC index, itsfive-year average growth rate is
negative (−8.3%).
