location of 211Us”—to classify these 211Us into different groups, and then do
comparative analysis on their differences. The main conclusions we obtain in this
chapter can be made below:
5.4.1 NEAM Disciplines...............................
- TFP indexes of NEAM research in 211Us grow steadily, and the strong growth
of TC index plays the leading role in the improvement of TFP. However, TEC
index is the factor holding back the growth of research TFP in 211Us, and the
status of SEC index should be paid more attention.
- The NEAM research productivities of both 985Us and non-985Us are steadily
increased, and the latter outperforms the former. The strong growth effect is the
major factor for the productivity improvement in non-985Us. A continuous
decline of SEC index has become the major factor to hinder the productivity
improvements of 985Us.
- Among 211Us located in the six regions, there are obvious regional differences
on the TFP index and its decomposition indexes. Though 211Us in all regions
show certain improvements, central 211Us and HSZUs are obviously higher
than other groups. To 211Us in all regions, growth effect obtained from tech-
nical change is the general channel for all groups to improve their research
productivities. Consequently, the gaps between different regions are mainly
from their gaps on TEC indexes. Compared with other groups, HSZUs show
outstanding performance in PTEC index, central 211Us show outstanding
performance in SEC index. These all contribute to their better performance in
2006 – 2010.
5.4.2 HSS Disciplines.................................
- TFP indexes of HSS research in 211Us are in the periodically growing trend.
The growths of TFP indexes are mainly relied on TC indexes, but negative
impact of TC indexes on TFP indexes is not ignorable. During 2006 to 2010,
TEC indexes in most 211Us are on the downtrend, and the substantial declines
of PTEC indexes are the major cause.
- To 985Us and non-985Us disciplines, their research productivities don’t per-
form so well, and the research productivities of non-985Us are even in the
downtrend. Although the primary approach for 985Us and non-985Us to
improve their TFP is still the growth effect obtained by technical change, the
profound declines of PTEC indexes trap both 985Us and non-985Us into tough
time.
