(3) The total number of Monographs is relatively stable during thisfive-year period.

(4) The total number of Reports decreases gradually, from 8819 in 2006 to 2599 in

Concerning the coefficient of variation in the parentheses, the coefficient of

variation of SSCI indicator is very big, reflecting the between-university gaps in

publishing international articles. The coefficient of variation of Reports indicator is

also very big, reflecting the between-university gaps in putting research knowledge

into application. The coefficient of variation of Monographs indicator is the

smallest, demonstrating that the between-university gaps are not clear on publishing

academic books. From the view of time trend, most coefficients of variation tend to

become smaller across the years, with an exception of Reports indicator.
It’s much clearer to observe the change of each HSS research output indicator for

211Us through calculating the university average. The calculations are presented in

Table3.18.

It can be found from Table3.18, the number of SSCI articles increases, while the

number of Reports decreases gradually. The change rates of CSSCI articles and

Monographs are positive in 2007–2009, but plummet in 2010.

NoteTo each indicator, thefirst row is sum, the second is average, and the third with parentheses is
the coefficient of variation. Intl-Ratio = total number of SSCI articles/(total number of SSCI and
CSSCI articles)
