increasing, with the annual growth rate approaching its peak at 2009. (2) The

numbers of SCI articles of both 985Us and non-985Us increase, of which 985Us

grows from 868.87 in 2006 to 1305.05 in 2010, and non-985Us grows from 153.33

in 2006 to 287.32 in 2010. The annual growth rates of both 985Us and non-985Us

approach their peak in 2009. (3) The averages of EI articles of 985Us and non-985Us

are on their rising trends, of which 985Us grows from 899.89 in 2006 to 1225.95 in

2010, and non-985Us grows from 180.18 in 2006 to 373.73 in 2010. The annual

growth rates of 985Us and non-985Us approach their peaks in 2008 and 2010

respectively. (4) The average of TOPESI articles is on a rising trend, but minor

fluctuations still exist in certain years. (5) The averages of Monographs of both

985Us and non-985Us drop in 2007, while they still on the rising trend in other

years. (6) The CSCD indicator of 985Us declines from 2491.3 in 2006 to 2369.5 in

2010, except an small increase in 2007. While to non-985Us, the CSCD indicator

grows from 687.22 in 2006 to 830.05 in 2009, with a small decline in 2010. This

reflects that 985Us, most of which are typically research-intensified universities,

emphasize more on the perspective of improving quality of research output.

In fact, 985Us and non-985Us are considerably different in the yearly change

rates of NEAM research outputs. See Table3.20for details.

It can be found in Table3.20, the growth rates of indicators like Patents, SCI, EI,

and CSCD are much higher in non-985Us rather than those in 985Us. Both 985Us
and non-985Us show more obviousfluctuations on the indicators of TOPESI and

Monographs.

In order to illustrate more visually the gaps and their changes on NEAM research

outputs between 985Us and non-985Us, we plot the yearly averages of each

indicator in bar chart. See Figs.3.36,3.37,3.38,3.39,3.40and3.41for details.

Figure3.36presents comparison on the averages of Patents between 985Us and

non-985Us. It can be seen from thefigure, there exists substantial and constantly

enlarging gap between the two types of 211Us. The difference is enlarged from

118.42 in 2006 to 265.21 in 2010.

Figure3.37shows comparison on the averages of SCI articles between 985Us

and non-985Us. It can be seen from thefigure, there exists substantial and con-

stantly enlarging gap between the two types of 211Us. The difference is enlarged

from 715.53 in 2006 to 1017.74 in 2010.

Figure3.38presents the comparison on the averages of EI articles between

985Us and non-985Us. It can be seen from thefigure, there exists substantial and

constantly enlarging gap between the two types of 211Us. The difference is

enlarged from 719.72 in 2006 to 852.2 in 2010.

Figure3.39shows the comparison on the averages of CSCD article between

985Us and non-985Us. It can be seen from thefigure, the differences between the two

types of universities are narrowed gradually, from 1804.08 in 2006 to 1542.82 in

Figure3.40presents the comparison on the averages of EI articles between

985Us and non-985Us. It can be seen from thefigure, there exists substantial and

constantly enlarging gap between the two types of 211Us. The difference is
enlarged from 6.94 in 2006 to 12.84 in 2010.
