Room-rental company Nestpick has rated 100 cities across the world in a bid
to work out which is the most attractive place for millennials to put down roots.
The Dutch capital of Amsterdam came up tops, awarded high scores for such
varied criteria as the number of festivals and start-ups it hosts as well as gender
equality and LGBT-friendliness. If the research inspires a visit, here’s our pick of
the city’s best options for Generation Y travellers.

  1. Set in a century-old university building by Oosterpark, Generator is one
of a new breed of upmarket hostels. All rooms have en suites, and guests can
socialise in a bar carved from the old lecture hall (generatorhostels.com).

  2. A canal-side haringhuis (herring stand) has been recast as street-food-style
Braii BBQ Bar. The marinated ribs are a speciality (braaiamsterdam.nl).

  3. The Fat Dog elevates the humble hotdog to an art form. Try the Naughty
Bangkok, with pickled veg, red curry mayo and dry crispy rice (thefatdog.nl).

  4. Take the free ferry to Amsterdam Noord for a drink at the warehouse-style
taproom of Oedipus Brewery, which has made its name with refreshing
creations such as Mama pale ale (oedipus.com).

A survey has revealed the world’s best cities for
millennials – and Amsterdam is top of the pile
