The Ottoman Empire was the one of the
largest and longest lasting empires in histor y.
Governed by Islamic teaching, it superseded
the Byzantine Empire. It was at the height of
its power under Suleiman the Magnificent,
reaching all the way to what is Austria today.
The empire began to decline after a heavy
defeat at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, during
which the majority of its navy was obliterated.

and Vietnam
Based in what is now Cambodia, the Khmer
Empire was the largest continuous empire in
Southeast Asia. Invaders from Siam – what is
Thailand today – conquered Angkor in 1431,
after which time the Khmer capital was moved
to Phnom Penh, establishing a key trade hub
on the Mekong River. One line of Khmer kings
is thought to have remained in Angkor, while
a second relocated to Phnom Penh to establish
their own kingdom. The empire was
over thrown in the 17th centur y.
