The Mongol Empire was the largest land empire in
histor y. Kickstar ted by Genghis Khan in 1206, this
vast empire covered most of the territor y between
East Asia and Central Europe – that’s around 33
million square kilometres, with over 100 million
people under its rule! Building this empire was not
a pretty process, though, as it is estimated that
some 30 million people were killed during the
empire’s expansion, which began in nor thern

China, and then stretched right across the continent.
The third son of Genghis Khan, Ogedei Khan, became
the second Great Khan of the empire. After Ogedei’s
death, however, the empire was subdivided into four
par ts, or “khanates”: the Yuan Dynasty, Chagatai
Khanate, the Golden Horde and Il-Khans, with each
territor y ruled by its own khan. Ogedei’s death also
stalled fur ther invasion in Europe; in ef fect, his death
lead to the fragmentation of the once colossal empire.

Included: most of the territory bet ween East Asia (from China) to Central Europe
