the circum-Pacific Belt – star ts at the southern
tip of South America, and extends up along the
coast of Nor th America and across the Bering
Strait, down through Japan and Indonesia and
then into New Zealand – which explains why
the latter is nicknamed “The Shaky Isles!” It ends
in Antarctica, where there is more than just ice

and polar bears: there are also many volcanoes.
Getting its name from its horseshoe-shape,
this ribbon – 40,000 kilometres long – is home
to 75 percent of the planet’s volcanoes – both
active and dormant. What’s more: 80 percent
of the biggest ear thquakes in the world have
occurred in this area. But why?
