MIND YOUR MANNERS!
- Bow politely when you meet someone,
thank them, or say goodbye - Bring a small gift with you from your
home countr y, especially if you’ll be
staying with locals – but don’t bring
anything extravagant - Use both of your hands when giving
and receiving cards or gifts - Like in many par ts of Asia, you should
remove your shoes before entering a
person’s home, or a temple - Slurp your noodles! It’s standard
practice in Japan
JAPAN is an archipelago, with some 4,000
islands! It has four main islands: Hokkaido,
Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Most of Japan’s
terrain consists of mountains, with the Japanese
Alps towering on Honshu. You may be familiar
with Japan’s most famous mountain, Mount
Fuji, which is also the countr y’s highest. As you
would have discovered in this issue’s Gorgeous
Geography section, it is also an active volcano!
The mountain is considered sacred by many
Japanese people. Japan has around 200
volcanoes, and 60 of these are active!
