Galdan Namchot. The
festival commemorates the
birthday and Buddhahood
of the Tibetan saint-scholar
Tsongkhaa—the founder
of the Gelukpa School. It
also marks the beginning of
the New Year celebrations
in Ladakh that continues
until Dosmoche festival in
February. Local favourites
such as thukpa, momo, and
butter tea are prepared, and
people exchange gifts.
