We went to Dr Chloe’s
Instagram account- jungle_
doctor -and came up with very
interesting news bites!

The inside story

“C

apsule endoscopy” - a camera inside
a pill that takes 360 degree diagnostic
images the whole way down the
gastrointestinal tract to help diagnose
GIT disease. The camera then sends the
images wirelessly to a computer, making
it even easier to diagnose tricky cases or
perform endoscopy without needing general
anaesthesia. This is a great alternative to
portable endoscopy used in surgery for
animals that would not be suitable candidates
to undergo a GA. It is used in dogs
successfully in the USA and Australia.

Bond so beautiful

I

love this story out of America where a young boy
suffering from vitiligo meets a dog with the same
condition. Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disorder
that is largely harmless yet results in a loss of
pigment from patches of the skin - and in this case,
shattering a young boys self confidence. However,
when Carter was flown across the country to
meet Rowdy the Labrador, the two struck up a
friendship and it helped to change the way Carter
looks at his own skin. Makes me think of all the
other conditions we could do this for, and about
the power of the human-animal connection. Very
happy for Rowdy and Carter!

In a nutshell

D

id you know that vets used to repair turtle
shells with fibreglass? Yes, the very same
thing that surfboards are made of was
commonly used to heal these little guys!
These days we have moved away from fibreglass
and towards the same material used in human
dental fillings - not only is it strong, but it also
releases fluorine providing local antibacterial
effects to the site. These turtles often make a great
recovery and look very cute in the process!
