Teachers, who educate
children, deserve more honor
than parents, who merely gave
them birth; for the latter
provided mere life, while the
former ensure a good life.
Aristotle (384 BC–322 BC),
Greek philosopher

The Stoics thought the first
step in transforming a society
into one in which people live
a good life is to teach people
how to make their happiness
depend as little as possible on
their external circumstances.
William B. Irvine (b. 1952), American
professor of philosophy, Wright State
University, in A Guide to the Good Life —
The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy (2008)

What is the happy life?
It is peace of mind, and
lasting tranquility.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4BC-65AD),
Roman philosopher and poet, in On the
Happy Life, Letter XCII

The good life is one inspired by
love and guided by knowledge.
Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), British
philosopher, in What I Believe (1925)

The chief requirement of the
good life is that one should
have some conception of
one’s capacities.
Iris Murdoch (1919-1999), Anglo-Irish
novelist and philosopher, in The Bell (1958)

The good life is a process, not
a state of being. It is a direction
not a destination.
Carl Ransom Rogers (1902-1987),
American psychologist, in On Becoming a
Person (1961)

I lived what most people call
the good life. I was happy,
but deep inside I always felt
that, with the short amount of
time we are given to live and
love in this world, we spend too
much time loving things
instead of people.
Antonia Brenner (1926-2013), American
Roman Catholic Sister who chose to care for
inmates at the maximum security La Mesa
Prison in Tijuana, Mexico

The U.S. is the only mature market where a majority of millennials expect to be better off than their parents,
whereas the balance of millennials in France, Japan, Belgium, South Korea, Italy, and Switzerland expect to be worse off. As
regards emotional well-being, in only 11 of the 30 countries covered does a majority expect to be “happier” than their parents.

The perception that the previous generation enjoyed happier times is held
most strongly in Japan, South Korea, and countries in mainland Europe.
