The animated saga’s final season begins with

a homecoming: Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar)

returns to her planet of Mandalore to rescue

her father, only to discover the Empire has

reactivated a long-dormant weapon. The

crew of theGhost also becomes more entan-

gled with the leaders we know from galactic

yesteryear. “They get folded into the larger

Rebellion, more familiar to what you saw

inRogue One,” says EP Dave Filoni. And the

show will delve deeper into the mysteries of

the Force. “For some it might be too much,”

says Filoni, “and then we have X-wings, so

Jason Alexander is back on TV, but sadly

this comeback vehicle will elicit more

groans than cheers. TheSeinfeld vet stars as

the regrettably named Ken Swallow, patri-

arch of a family band, who has sold his

house for a touring bus, forcing his wife and

four kids to make desperate bids for gigs on

the road. The self-satisfied comedy can’t

get enough of the family name’s innuendo—

get it? Swallow?—nor the dull contrast

between the Swallows’ wholesome public

image and cynical private life. They make

for tiresome company—we won’t be hitch-

Viewers should think of the return ofStranger Things not so

much as a season 2 but as a movie sequel. That’s how the cre-

ators, Ross and Matt Duffer, are envisioning the second install-

ment of their blockbuster ’80s-set horror story. “Aliens is still an

Alien movie, but the tone is a little bit different,” says Ross of the

model forStranger Things 2. “You want it to feel like the same

show, but at the same time you want to expand upon it. We

wanted it to have even more weight to it. It’s more complex in a

lot of ways.” The new installment picks up a year later with Will

(Noah Schnapp) still having lingering issues from being in

the Upside Down—in particular, terrifying visions of a ginor-

mous creature the kids nickname “the shadow monster.” Says

Matt, “The question becomes, Are the visions a harbinger of

things to come?” One difference from season 1: Joyce (Winona

Ryder) smiles...for a bit. “That will change,” says Ross. “It’s

nice to see her start happy.” Something tells us this “shadow

monster” will help turn that smile upside down.—Tim Stack
